Assalamu Alaikum w.w

I thought there should be a section for stories or quatations that are frequently mentioned but are either misquoted or the reference is unknown. If someone has knowledge of its reference they can share it with everyone. If there is a story which you frequently hear and have looked everywhere but cannot find it, please post it!

I remember hearing this story many a times, especially in my maktab and darul uloom days. I have kept the story according to how I had heard it. Here it goes...

Once upon a time there was a pious man. He was walking pass a graveyard. He had been gifted by Allah with being able to see conditions within the grave. He saw a man being punished by the angels of punishment.

A few years later this pious man revisited the graveyard. This time he noticed that the same person was enjoying the blessings of Jannah in his grave. The pious man asked Allah as to how the condition of this man had changed.

Allah replied: 'This man was sinful and therefore he was receiving my punishment. When he died his wife was pregnant with his child. This child grew up and was sent to Maktab by his mother. The Ustadh (teacher) made him recite Bismillah. I (Allah s.w.t) do not wish to punish the boy's father whilst he calls me Rahman and Raheem.'

I later found this story in Imaam Fakhrud-deen Razi (r.a)'s infamous tafseer known as التفسير الكبير (or تفسير الرازى). It is in the 1st volume under Surah Fatihah. I have copied the Arabic account from the tafseer for the benefit of Ulama / Students.

As you can see the pious man was not just any ordinary man, he was

Please remember we should try and locate the original source(s) of all our research. Many a times changes occur when authors copy from one book and another. Many mistakes are caused in translation and even in by the scribes. I have come across many ahaadeeth in famous books that have a reference of Bukhari and Muslim. After researching these ahaadeeth I find the words of these 'narrations' are not even in the كتب الجمع
