Once Hujjatul Islam - Hadhrat Mawlana Qaasim Nanotwi Rahimahullah (founder of Dar al-Uloom Deoband) said '3 books are a person's best friend (for those of you acquainted with urdu (insaan ki al-bail-ee)
1) The Qur'an
2) Sahih al-Bukhari (or according to Allama Aini RA al-Jāmi’ al-Musnad al-Sahīh al-Mukhtaṣar min umoor Rasûl Allāh wa sunnanihi wa ayyāmihi (and replace the umoor with Hadith for Allama ibn-Hajar's narration))
3) and Mathnawi (The Great Jalal-Uddin Rumi's masterpiece)
Then my Shaykh said 'take three books with you, wherever you go, in whatever field you go, you will be successful...IA
1) The Qur'an
2) Mishkaat al-Masaabeeh
3) Ihyaa uloom al-Deen (The magnum opus of Imam Ghazzali)
I remember once Hadhrat Mufti Inayatullah Sb. said something similar in Arbi Punjum...
(Discourses of Hadhrat Mowlana Saeed Kakarwi Sb.)

The great Scholar, Hadhrat Aqdas Moulana Maseehullah Khah Sahib used to say that for an Alim, three books are essential for their Muta'la:
1) Bayaan-Ul-Quraan
2) Hidayah
3) Mishkaat
Thereafter, he used to say that due to the fact that students these days dont have good istidaad, he used to say the following three kitaabs,
1) Ma'ariful Quran
2) Behishti Zewar
3) Mishkaat
( Taken from the lessons of Hadhrat Mufti Inayatullah Sb)
